If you prefer natural scents, essential oils are a great choice. They’re extracted from herbs, flowers, and plants, most often through steam distillation. That involves heating the components until the gas is released, then condensing the gas back into a liquid. It’s a gentle process that ensures the sensitive compounds don’t break down. Our essential oils are 100% pure unless otherwise stated. However, not everything in nature produces an essential oil – you won’t find strawberry or vanilla. That means there are fewer options to choose from. It’s also important to read the descriptions before use. Citrus essential oils fade in cold process soap, oils like cinnamon and clove can’t be used in leave-on products, and others like juniper berry can’t be used if you’re pregnant or if you have kidney problems.
Fragrance oils are lab-created using natural and man-made compounds. They are deemed to be skin safe or non-skin safe. Non-skin safe fragrances can be used in items such as air fresheners and candles along with other non-skin applications. Skin safe is for use in cosmetics and other items that will make contact with skin (such as laundry detergent, soaps, fabric softener, etc). They are extensively tested to ensure their safety. Not all fragrance oils are created equally. Some fragrance oils contain phthalates to create certain scents. Phthalates have been indicated to be endocrine (hormone) disruptors. We always make sure that when we are purchasing fragrance oils, they come from very reputable companies (not ebay or amazon) and they are phthalate free. I only use fragrances that I am comfortable using on every member of my family, and myself.
Most oils have a rating which means they are likely to clog pores and cause those pimples, and blemishes we all hate. Generally, the higher the rating, the more rich and thick the oil is which is usually better for body care than face care. As you can see from the ingredients listed above, our face care ingredients contain ingredients that rank from 0-2 meaning it is highly unlikely to clog your pores. Our body care, like our deodorants, and sugar scrubs, contain coconut oil which is packed with fatty acids and moisturizing effects, it hydrates the skin which is why it is wonderful for body care products. Coconut oil is ranked at a 4 on the comedogenic scale so that is an oil you would want to avoid using on your face. The rating break down is as follows:
0 – completely non-comedogenic
1 – Slightly comedogenic
2-3 – Moderately comedogenic
4-5 – Severely comedogenic
